 WELLNESS

  • Offering Balanced Choices menu items to promote healthier eating

  • Using BALANCE icons to identify healthy and sustainable menu choices

  • Providing nutrition and wellness information through Nutrigrams and Superfoods

  • Providing nutritional information at point of sale

  • Providing menu options for special diets (e.g. vegan, gluten-free, kosher, halal, etc.)

  • Actively running seasonal Wellness promotions


ENVIRONMENT

  • Implementing sorting stations for recycling

  • Purchasing 100% compostable, chlorine free napkins for the café and catering functions

  • Using bulk condiments to reduce packaging waste

  • Implementing food waste awareness in the production kitchen

  • Recycling cans, bottles and other recyclables in the production kitchen and dining areas

  • Composting food waste in the production kitchen and dining areas

  • Biodegradable packaging program to reduce packaging waste

  • Recycling used cooking oil and grease into biodiesel

  • Lug-a-Mug Program - offering a discount on reusable beverage containers

  • Implementing water and energy reduction practices in the production kitchen

  • Trayless days to reduce water and energy usage

  • Project Clean Plate – awareness program to reduce food waste in residential dining

  • Reducing energy usage through demand ventilation controls on kitchen exhaust hoods

SUPPLY CHAIN

  • Working towards becoming a designated Fair Trade Campus

  • Using Marine Stewardship Council Certified seafood

  • Purchasing and promoting local, seasonal produce and products, as available

  • Purchasing and promoting produce from our very own Chef’s Garden on campus

  • Delivering a Styrofoam-free foodservice operation

  • Offering recyclable disposable food and beverage containers

  • Offering compostable disposable food and beverage containers

  • Purchasing sustainable seafood

  • Offering certified Fair Trade Organic products including coffee, tea and chocolate


COMMUNITY

  • Supporting local community initiatives (e.g. United Way, Drive Away Hunger)

  • Training frontline foodservice staff and managers on Sustainability and best practices to reduce impacts

  • Food donations to campus and/or community groups

  • Fundraising in support of Local Food Banks

  • Active fundraiser for the Children’s Wish Foundation the past three years raising over $12,000 from our own
    Chartwells DAL AC location and now we are moving forward in supporting Food Banks Canada
